We have just started a lesson on printmaking! Students are creating 3, 4"x6" designs of either flowers, plants, or insects. Photos will be posted soon!
Students have recently started a super fun STEAM lesson! Students are drawing familiar cartoon characters and will be painting a sheet of transparency paper to create an "X-Ray" of the exaggerated bone structure of their cartoon characters. We are making connections to Science, while also discussing contemporary artist, Jason Freeny. We also were able to talk about how cartoons were originally made using layers of transparency paper. Check out the video link i to see how Disney created and used the Multiplane Camera! Students have just finished up their Portfolio Design projects! See some of the examples below. This lesson was on 1 point perspective.
For a quick "wrap up" project for this quarter, students created cut paper "Word Art". We discussed how paper cuttings became an artwork and how this technique transformed across the world. Recently, we discussed what Illuminated Manuscripts are and how the artwork used to create them is of historical significance. We discussed how each book created during the Medieval times had to be written by hand and that some of the pages were beautifully and ornately decorated. Students chose a letter (this could be an initial of their first, last or middle name) and rewrote it in a font of their choice. Students then created their version of an "Illuminated Manuscript" by including other decorative elements. See the finished examples below!
This week in art, we began to work on our Radial Design Mandalas. This project will focus on color theory, connections to math as well as cultural connections. Students learned where Mandalas came from and created 4 preliminary sketches. Each sketch features 8 "pie slices" that are identical and repeat. This creates a radial design. Students also had to decide how to color each of the 4 quadrants using 4 different color schemes. Work will be posted soon!
This week in art, we continued with our Fabric Weaving lesson. Students learned about weaving throughout history and across different cultures. Students also learned weaving vocabulary such as : Warp, weft, textile arts, and tension. Students learned how to create their own looms as well as weave on them. Photos to come!
This week in art, we have started creating our portfolios in 1-point perspective. This means that students had to learn how to identify where and what a vanishing point is, and how to create block or bubble letters that go back in space to meet the vanishing point. Check out the final projects below! If you've been out: Please see attached rubric and handout.
